Biography of Simon Sultana – Experienced Self Defence Instructor/ Licenced Security Officer and Qualified Personal Trainer
Simon was first introduced into Martial Arts from the age of 15. He initially expressed interest in Tae Kwon Do at the age of 6 because his older brother Anthony was studying it at the time. Anthony learnt Tae Kwon Do under the tutelage of Master Oh who runs a dojo in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Simon asked his mother if he could begin training with his brother, but she thought he was too young and it was too far from home.
It wasn’t until he was being bullied at school and was assaulted at a teenage house party that he felt he needed to learn to protect himself. His brother Patrick and his sister Sam suggested he needed to take up Martial Arts. Simon began learning Shukokai Karate in 2000 under his first instructor Sensei Anthony Jeffries. It was during his first 7 years of training he developed a keen interest in the arts, and was the pride of his club, competing in club tournaments as well as at NAS tournaments.
Simon also was acknowledged by his teachers by receiving club awards for his dedication to their club and his training. Simon would religiously train 5-6 days a week, eventually earning his Brown Belt 3 stripes. Several years passed and Simon was keen to learn something new, so he began training elsewhere. Around this time, he completed a certificate 3/4 in Fitness in became a Qualified Personal Trainer.
Simon then found himself learning Bushidokan (Hybrid Style) under Shihan Vincent Bussutil and in conjunction with Kali under Master Tony Attard of the Philippine Martial Arts Alliance. During this time, he was a well-respected ISKA tournament competitor earning not one, not two, not three but FOUR 2nd Place trophies in State Competition sparring and self-defence events!
Simon progressed rapidly in the 3 years he studied there earning his Brown Belt in Bushidokan and Instructor Certification in Kali, he then sought a new challenge by learning a radical style of Self Defence called Close Quarter Combat. This system was taught by one of Shihan Vince’s former students Glenn Zwiers, and this is the style that Simon has predominately studied also learning from other Chief Instructors such as Hock Hochheim and Simon’s previous mentor Peter Sciarra.
Simon also has earned his Level 3 Basic Instructor Certificate in Pacific Archipelago Concepts encompassing elements of Stick, Knife, Sinawali Boxing, Silat, Jiu Jitsu and Jungle Fighting
Simon studied with Peter for 6 years consistently, and worked solidly in the Security Industry since 2010, completing a certificate 2/3 in Security Operations as well as a certificate 4 in Small Business and Frontline Management. He has recently completed a Diploma in Leadership and Management.
It is only in recent times has made the switch to Wing Chun Kung Fu under the tutelage of Sifu Andrew “Bruce” Leader. Simon loves the traditional elements of his newfound Kung Fu training and has felt that it has given his style of Si-Kyu-Shudo-Kai that little bit of flair as well as much needed heart. Simon will always be a true martial artist and has had the opportunity to meet or train with some of the best in the world such as Benny the Jet Urquidez, Richard Norton, Stan Longinidis, Jeremy Takody, Master Toddy, Master Julius Melegrito, Terrence Evins, Bob Jones and Sam Greco.
